This is a supervisory position within the Public Works Department’s Traffic Services Division. Responsible for the supervision of division personnel involved in traffic signal construction and maintenance as well as street signage fabrication, installation, and maintenance. Assigns work orders to division personnel according to position functions, available personnel, equipment, and material resources.
- Supervises the operations for the Traffic Services Division within the Public Works Department. Plans and coordinates crew assignments and receives direction from the Deputy Director of Public Works – Operations, the Public Works Engineering Division, and the Public Works Director for special traffic construction projects.
- Coordinates the installation and maintenance of traffic signals on City streets and state routes within the city limits.
- Assigns work orders to technicians and coordinates the installation, maintenance, and fabrication of city street signs, pavement markings, electronic signals, and similar projects. Plans for the necessary equipment, materials, and supplies for all projects.
- Assigns projects to and coordinates activities of the Traffic Systems Technician.
- Trains and assists the operation of the Traffic Control Center when needed.
- Inspects ongoing projects for compliance with design, work and safety standards and adjusts as needed.
- Provides training and technical assistance to technicians and City Service Workers on the job site or the sign fabrication shop as needed. Develops a training program for safety, and equipment operation; monitors success of the program and adjusts as needed.
- Provides administrative functions for the division including overtime approvals, vacation and leave requests, position requisitioning, interviews for hire, counseling for disciplinary actions, and budget recommendations. Additionally responsible for ensuring that all required performance evaluations are completed from the subordinate supervisory staff in a timely manner. Provides instruction in the proper procedures in completing performance evaluations.
- Reports serious disciplinary or unresolved substandard performance matters to the Assistant Public Works Director/Operations; recommends action to be taken and provides documentation as needed. Interprets and explains City and department policies and procedures to employees.
- Responds to citizen complaints and takes corrective action; follows up to ensure resolution of complaints. Notifies the Deputy Director of Public Works - Operations of serious or unresolved public complaints.
- Coordinates emergency calls for signal/sign repair services and directs crews as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED and a minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in street sign fabrication and design, pavement markings, transportation data collection (traffic counts, turning movements, and accident data) electronic signal repair installation and maintenance.
- Ability to use a computer and MS Office Suite software, including Word, Excel, Outlook and other applications to compose brief letters, job estimates and costing, budgeting and E-mail communications.
- Must have a Class C Georgia Driver’s License and a satisfactory seven-year driving history to include no DUI’s within the last five years. Must also obtain an “Air Brake Certification” within six months of date of hire.
- Ability to operate and instruct others in the operation of bucket trucks and other related equipment.
- Knowledge of street sign construction materials and methods including traffic signal repair, pole line and underground signal construction techniques.
- Knowledge of GDOT standards specifications and practices.
- Working knowledge of traffic safety standards MUTCD and NEMA traffic signal standards.
- Working knowledge of basic drafting skills and computer aided drafting systems (Auto CAD).
- Excellent verbal and written communications and ability to ensure supervisory directives are completed according to plan. Ability to maintain positive relations with division subordinates and city/BLW employees and public.
- Knowledge of supervisory methods, personnel regulations including hiring, interviewing and termination procedures.
- Ability to maintain accurate written and electronic records in job costs, time management, and inventory control.
